Managing Karaoke Revolution

in Music Class

To maximize class time efficiency, these procedures work really well in a 45—50 minute class period:

Play one song, 3 times in a row

· Pick one of the song options for the class, and identify three students who want to sing that selection as a solo.

· From the Main Menu, select Quick play.

· Select the intended song as outlined previously.

· Ask student whether they want Practice or Full/Short song mode, and select their choice accordingly.

· Ask student if they want the class to sing along with them.

· Make sure judging level is set at easy.

· Start song with student singing into the microphone.

· On completion of a scored song (not in practice mode), students will take note of their score. Class clapping is encouraged, no matter the score.

· Have the next two students who want to sing the cued up song go through the same process.

Playing each song 3x in a row saves a lot of time in loading game options. Playing a song more than 3x in a row is too repetitive, so go on to the next song title, and come back to this one after all other song selections have been cycled through. For the second round through each song title, select students who wish to sing with a buddy, and follow instructions for choosing the duet mode.

To get the most out of your Karaoke Revolution experience in Music classes, here are some additional tips.

Lights off

If you are projecting Karaoke Revolution onto a wall or screen, turning the lights off allows everyone to better see the screen. It also provides cover for any self-conscious students. You may want to keep a flashlight handy in case you need to refer to these instructions during class.

Place singer behind classmates

Placing the singer behind classmates reduces student anxiety because classmates are sitting down and focused on the TV or projection screen.

Length of KR unit

You’ll probably need two 45-50 minute class periods to complete KR Training Mode, plus allow each student in a class of 20-24 students to have at least one turn at the microphone.

Assisting off-pitch students

To assist students who have trouble staying on the correct pitch, try singing in duet mode on the second microphone. Position yourself close to the student to best influence their pitch.

Sing into the microphone

For accurate pitch arrow and phrase meter feedback, remind students to hold the microphone close to their mouth.

Appropriate grade levels for KR

While anyone can play Karaoke Revolution, reading skills are helpful in learning song lyrics. These skills are usually developed well enough to play KR by second grade. Younger children can certainly play — they may just need additional time initially to memorize lyrics.

Note:  KR is a great literacy integration tool in the Music Education classroom because of its lyrics requirements, and also because of the phrasing tool which requires players to track note tubes from left to right.
